Eid-al-Adha, also known as Bakrid, is the second most important festival of Islam. People belonging to Islam celebrate this festival every year about 70 days after the end of Ramadan. This year in 2025, Eid Al-Adha will be celebrated on Saturday, June 7. The festival of Bakrid, celebrated on the 10th date of Dhul Hij – Zil Hijja, is also known as the festival of sacrifice because on this day people sacrifice goats. Bakrid is also known as Eid ul Azha, Eid ul Zuha, Bakra Eid or Eid ul Bakra.
People of the Muslim community sacrifice according to their status on this day and distribute meat to the needy and the poor. The meat of the sacrifice is divided into three parts. One part is given to the poor and the needy, the second part is given to relatives and friends, and the third part is kept for oneself. In Islam, only those animals are considered legitimate to sacrifice which are healthy.
According to Islamic belief, when Prophet Muhammad was going to sacrifice his son blindfolded, Allah’s angels removed his son and placed a lamb in his place. In this way, the first sacrifice in Islam is considered to have been made by Hazrat Ibrahim. It is believed that since the time of Hazrat Ibrahim, this tradition of sacrifice has been going on continuously on the festival of Bakrid. Preparations for Eid-ul-Azha begin several days in advance. People clean their houses, buy new clothes, and prepare delicious dishes.
