On the whole, Ek Din is a sincere film made from the heart — and one that touches the heart. But the problem with a film starring an actor, who doesn’t have much of a fan following, is to get the audience into the cinemas. This will remain a major challenge unless the producers of the film move heaven and earth to keep promoting the film after release.

When we ask for love stories and softer heroes when the resurgence of the Angry Young Man is in full swing, we don’t mean making romance bland and chemistry nonexistent. Ek Din begins with a worthy declaration about jaisa filmon mein hota hai waise zindagi mein nahin hota — hoobahoo. You’ll be an idiot not to believe that.

The bigger problem, though, lies in the writing. The film wants to present Dinesh as a “green flag” – sensitive, self-aware, non-toxic, but pairs him with a heroine who, despite being introduced as independent, is written with surprising passivityEven the release timing feels off. This is a film that would have blended right into a Christmas line-up or a Valentine’s Day slate, somewhere its mood could have worked in its favour. Dropped into an April release window, it feels even more out of place.

To sum it up, this review started with a comparison to Sadma. That film left you gutted, long after the credits rolled, while Ek Din settles for something far more fleeting. It’s occasionally affecting courtesy Sai Pallavi’s presence, but it never quite hits the emotional crescendo it seems to be chasing.

: Gentle, simple, heartwarming love stories are always welcome, especially in this climate where one can’t ignore Hindi cinema’s obsessive affinity towards aggressive, gory, testosterone-pumped actioners. But simplicity shouldn’t be mistaken for shallowness or a lack of substance. The makers are so intent on keeping things breezy and neat that they never quite engage with the emotional mess of the characters.

Ek Din’ is a film that had the chance to go much deeper and truly move the audience, but the screenplay holds it back. First-time director Sunil Pandey shows sincerity, but his lack of experience is visible. The film leans on familiar ideas and never fully explores its emotional strength. It is unclear whether it wants to remain light or deliver a strong emotional impact.

Ek Din isn’t actively terrible. It tries to bring back clean youthful romance back to Bollywood, currently trapped between excessively violent and misogynist planks. It’s even got a forgettable Arijit song. But, just like its leads, it has no zing.

An official adaptation of the 2016 Thai romance One Day, Sai Pallavi and Junaid Khan’s Ek Din fails to create the magic the Chantavit Dhanasevi, Nittha Jirayungyurn-starrer did a decade ago. While the music is great and touches the audiences’ souls, the creepiness of Junaid’s character is a big turn off. Watch it in theatres only if you are a huge Sai fan, else wait till it releases on OTT.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions — Ek Din Movie
Q1. What is Ek Din about? Ek Din is a romantic drama that tells the story of a one-day love story between two people. It tries to bring back the kind of soft, sweet romance that Bollywood hasn’t explored much lately, in a world dominated by action-heavy films.
Q2. Who is in the cast of Ek Din? The film stars Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi in the lead roles. Junaid Khan is making his early mark in Bollywood, while Sai Pallavi is already one of the most respected actresses working in Indian cinema today.
Q3. Who directed Ek Din? Ek Din was directed by Sunil Pandey, who is making his feature film debut with this project. While his sincerity shows on screen, critics have noted that his lack of experience is visible in certain parts of the film.
Q4. Who produced Ek Din? The film was produced by Mansoor Khan, Aamir Khan, and Aparna Purohit — a fairly notable production team that gave the project a lot of credibility even before release.
Q5. When did Ek Din release and where can I watch it? Ek Din released in Indian theatres on May 1, 2026. It has a runtime of 2 hours and 5 minutes. An OTT release date has not been confirmed yet, but it is expected to arrive on a streaming platform in the coming weeks.
Q6. Is Ek Din based on an original story? No. Ek Din is an official adaptation of the popular 2016 Thai romantic film One Day, which had its own dedicated fan base. Fans of the original may find the Hindi version does not quite capture the same magic.
Q7. What do critics think of Ek Din? The critical response has been mostly mixed to negative. Out of 8 reviews counted, only 1 was positive, 2 were neutral, and 5 were negative, giving it an average rating of around 2.2 out of 5. Most critics appreciated the film’s gentle tone and Sai Pallavi’s screen presence, but felt the writing was weak and the chemistry between the leads was missing.
Q8. Is Sai Pallavi good in the film? Almost every critic singled out Sai Pallavi as the one real bright spot in the movie. Even reviewers who panned the film admitted she brings something warm and watchable to her role, despite being let down by how her character was written.
Q9. Should I watch Ek Din in theatres? If you are a big Sai Pallavi fan, it is worth a watch. Otherwise, most critics suggest waiting for the OTT release. The film is harmless and inoffensive, but it does not offer enough to justify a full theatre experience for the average viewer.
Q10. How does Ek Din compare to other Bollywood releases right now? Ek Din stands out for trying to do something different — it is a calm, soft-spoken love story in a season full of loud action films. That ambition is appreciated, but many reviewers felt the execution did not live up to the idea.
