Every year on 14 April, the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar is celebrated. Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar was the architect of the Indian Constitution and a social reformer. He fought for equality, justice and rights. In Indian history, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar is known as a jurist, economist, politician and great social reformer. This day is important as it is celebrated to pay tribute to one of the most influential leaders of independent India. This day is celebrated as ‘Ambedkar Equality Day’ in British Columbia, Canada.
Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar was born on 14 April 1891. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s father was Subedar Ramji Maloji Sakpal. He was a Subedar in the British Army. Babasaheb’s father was a follower of Sant Kabir and was also very knowledgeable. Ambedkar took his schooling in Satara. He had to face discrimination from an early age. However, he was a promising student. Bhimrao Ambedkar went on to study at the London School of Economics, where he obtained several degrees, including a doctorate.
After independence, in 1947, he was appointed Minister of Law and Justice in the first cabinet of the country’s first Prime Minister, Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, but resigned from the post in 1951, expressing differences with Prime Minister Nehru’s policy on the Kashmir issue, India’s foreign policy and the Hindu Code Bill. In 1952, Columbia University conferred on him the degree of LLD in recognition of his contribution to drafting the Constitution of India. He converted to Buddhism on 14 October 1956 in a historic ceremony in Nagpur and died on 6 December 1956.

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar was a strong advocate of upliftment of the marginalized sections of the society, especially the plight of Dalits in India, as he faced social evils like discrimination, casteism since childhood. On this day, the nation remembers Dr. Ambedkar’s tireless efforts for social justice, equality and empowerment of the oppressed sections of the society.
