In what will be a big relief to millions of Americans, the Social Security payments of up to $5,108 will be released this week.

However, the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment in March will not be forthcoming because of a scheduling adjustment.

This writeup details who will be the beneficiaries of the $5,108 payments and also will discuss the fallouts of the repeal of the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO). Know everything about Social Security benefits, payment dates, and newly enacted laws and how it will impact your monthly checks.

The SSI payments are usually released by the Social Security Administration (SSA) on the first of every month.

However, if the first falls on a weekend, the payment is effected on the previous working day.

Since 1 March falls on Saturday, the beneficiaries will receive the payment on February 28. Hence they will get their benefits in March but there will not be SSI payments.

The SSA payments will be made in two batches.

The first set will be released on Wednesday, February 26. Persons who were born between 21 and 31 of any month will receive the payments on February 26. The amount which the beneficiaries will be receiving will depend upon earnings history and work credits.

The highest Social Security retirement benefit in 2024 is $5,108 per month, and persons who retire above the age of 70 years will be the beneficiary. However, the amount which a majority of pensioners will be receiving will be around $1,907 per month. The amount will depend upon certain parameters like lifetime earnings, age at retirement, and work history.

Social Security payments are sent out based on the beneficiary’s birth date:

  • Persons born between the 1st and the 10th of the month will get paid on the second Wednesday.
  • Persons born between the 11th and the 20th of the month will get paid on the third Wednesday.
  • Persons born between the 21st and 31st of the month will get paid on the fourth Wednesday.

Citizens who are eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) will also receive the benefits in the same pattern followed for the payments for Social Security retirement benefits.

However, persons who were beneficiaries of the Social Security Disability Insurance before 1997 will receive their payments on the third of each month, regardless of their birth date.

Recent changes have been made in the Social Security Fairness Act, recently signed into law. The latest law removes the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), which cut the benefits in certain categories like the teachers and public service workers. Such beneficiaries will see their monthly Social Security payments augmented.
