5 Must-Do Activities In Western Australia

With the big names like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns always stealing the spotlight, the whole state of Western Australia rarely comes onto the radar. But hey, this aloofness can work in your favour. While the east coast is teeming with crowds and inflated hotel prices, WA offers a more affordable and more stunning way to explore some of the country’s most staggering scenery, from colourful reefs and diverse wildlife to seductive sunsets and gorges billions of years old.

It’s a state that’s best for travellers who want substance and spectacle over hype, though it delivers all. So here are five activities in Western Australia that explain why the state deserves to be explored…

Sunset Cruises in Broome

Broome is located in the Kimberley region and has a very strong reputation for its alluring sunsets. Every evening, the sky above Cable Beach turns into a spectacular mix of gold, orange, crimson and deep violet, reflected across the Indian Ocean. People usually gather along the beach or even go on sunset camel rides. But a sunset cruise is the most authentic way to experience this spectacle.

Broome sunset cruises let visitors experience Broome from the water, where the uninterrupted horizon and changing colours become even more dramatic. Most cruises depart late in the afternoon and cruise along the coastline as daylight fades. The reef is protected as part of Ningaloo Marine Park, so you’ll be asked to follow reef-safe practices and avoid touching coral or marine life.

Quokkas on Rottnest Island

Rottnest Island is only a short ferry ride from Fremantle and is home to the world’s largest wild quokka population, estimated at between 10,000 and 20,000. Quokkas are small marsupials, roughly cat-sized, distantly related to kangaroos, and they’re famous for their permanently smiling faces. The island got its name from the Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh, who mistook the quokkas for oversized rats and named the place accordingly.

You can spot them around the Settlement, picnic areas, The Basin, Pinky Beach, the trail up to Wadjemup Lighthouse and so on. Feeding or touching them is prohibited, both for the animals’ wellbeing and to preserve their natural behaviour.

Margaret River is located three hours from Perth. It has now grown into one of the most respected wine regions in Australia. More than 200 vineyards are scattered across the area, which produces internationally recognised Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
