Every year 24th April is celebrated as ‘National Panchayati Raj Day’. It is an important occasion to mark the establishment of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in India. It is a day dedicated to promoting grassroots democracy, strengthening local governance and empowering rural communities. The day highlights the importance of grassroots democracy and community participation in decision making.
The Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992, which came into force from 24th April, 1993, has given constitutional status to Panchayati Raj Institutions. Thus this date is a defining moment in the history of decentralization of political power to the grassroots level. Every state celebrates National Panchayati Raj Day, but New Delhi hosts the main celebrations with central events.
India’s three-tier (Gram Panchayat, Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad) administrative structure is known as the Panchayati Raj system, its aim is to bring about grassroots reforms in rural areas. To convey to the people the historic recognition of Panchayati Raj in India’s democratic system.
Rajasthan and other states also organize local events on this day. This day reminds us that strong villages make a strong nation, and the states celebrate it proudly with great enthusiasm at various levels.
