The story is interesting but it is so well-known that there’s no novelty factor in it. Having said that, it must be added that it will appeal more to the audience in Maharashtra . On the whole, Raja Shivaji is a well-made film but its box-office prospects are ordinary because a historical film ought to be outstanding for it to appeal to an all-India audience, which this film is not. However, the performance of the original Marathi version at the box-office in Maharashtra will be good.

Raja Shivaji isn’t always as sharp as the wagh nakh (tiger’s claws) that the protagonist employs in battle but it does have its moments. It isn’t for those who are looking to be swept off their feet.It is the sort of film that holds its horses until it is absolutely necessary to let them loose and fires its cannons and wields its swords and daggers in a controlled way. The question is: does the audience have any patience for such fare anymore?

espite this, Deshmukh creates a big screen experience firmly rooted in the ultra-colourful Amar Chitra Katha aesthetic. Those with long memories may be swiftly taken back to the impressive figure of the Maratha warrior astride his horse, brandishing a sword while fighting off hordes of Mughal invaders.

With its magnificent VFX, looks like a fortune has been spent on the film. But lavishness alone cannot make the film survive, the storytelling needs to be sharp to engage the audiences. The exposure that the Indian audience has got with the OTT boom and the exposure to world cinema, the filmmakers must understand that they too have become demanding; just visual flourish with an overdose of stars cannot make a film successful. Just having technology is not enough!

Overall, Raja Shivaji is a sincere and ambitious attempt at telling an important story. It is not without flaws, mainly its pacing, but it delivers enough strong moments and a committed central performance to make it worth watching.

Raja Shivaji is a win for the Marathi industry. Rest, as a story, could have been better, tighter and more engaging given its runtime. A fitting tribute to Chhatrapati, this is a love letter from Riteish to the braveheart. Salman Khan’s cameo is worth the wait, but it is neither great.
