A tweet has been making rounds on the internet since March 6 which claimed that video game developer Scott Cawthon is no more and is dead at the age of 46 years.

The genesis to the story can be traced to a tweet dated March 4 from the user named @cawthonmedias while the tweet on March 6 was posted by @images_i_hate2.

The tweets generated a phenomenal 8 million views on X as well as a barrage of comments and enquiries from the video gaming community who tried to confirm the veracity of the news.

What is the truth about “Scott Cawthon’s Death” viral story?

Looking at certain facts it is clear that the veracity of the story is very suspect. For one, no other media outlet of repute has covered this breaking news.

Another fact which hints that this is fake news is a community note has been attached with the tweet attributed to @images_i_hate2’s which claimed that the creator of Five Nights at Freddy’s has died which stated that the news was fake.

Scot’s family has also not shared about his death or published any report on this matter.

People have been making a beeline towards the social media platforms trying to confirm the news that the video game developer is no more. Many have believed the news that Scott Cawthon is indeed no more.

One person stated,

“Is this real?…. I gotta spread the word”

However most of the users did not believe the viral news and even found humor in the situation. One user even reasoned that if Scot is indeed no more it will have been updated on Google by now. Users also took to social media to negate the news that Scott Cawthon is dead.

The incident is a repeat of a similar rumor which had surfaced on X and it started as a joke by FNAF fans. On July 24, 2023 a user by the name of @DevSprings posted on X that Freddy Fazebear killed Scott on the set of the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie.

For the unversed Freddy Fazebear is the ostensible character in Scott’s game and was also was the main antagonist.  The game which was created by Scot basically involves the guards who are trying to survive the onslaught by the mascot for five nights. Fazbear is the mascot in the pizzeria featured in the game that attacks the guards. Scott Cawthon exited from game development in 2021.

Scott Cawthon was born in Houston, Texas, and is best known for creating Five Nights at Freddy’s which was a big commercial hit. Scot had produced the first two series of the horror-themed franchise in 2014. This was followed by eight more versions in the course of the next seven years and also spawned a number of spin offs. Scott also produced a film of the same name and it was released in 2023.
