There has been a deadly listeria outbreak across 21 states in the US, and it has been linked to frozen supplement shakes.

The epidemic has already left a dozen people dead and more than three dozen people hospitalized.

The epidemic has led to an FDA investigation and a nationwide recall of the suspected frozen supplement shakes.

The FDA launched an investigation on Friday and was able to trace the outbreak to frozen shakes sold under the Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial brands.

The CDC, local health authorities, and the FDA are keeping a close watch on the epidemic, which has spread across 21 states.

As per reports, the listeria outbreak has been seen in patients in hospitals and long-term care facilities.

The listeria epidemic has forced Lyons Magnus LLC to start a recall of several Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial frozen supplemental shakes.

The company has also identified the source of the infection as the shakes manufactured by Prairie Farms Dairy, Inc. at its facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The FDA, in a statement, said that it has recorded 38 infections across 21 states. It also added that one person required hospitalization, while there have been 12 fatalities.

90% of the infections occurred in persons who were in long-term care facilities or were already hospitalized before falling ill.

The CDC has also investigated listeria outbreaks since 2018, and between 2024 and 2025, there were 20 cases of infection but no ability to pinpoint the source of the infection.

What is Listeriosis (Listeria Poisoning)?

Listeriosis, or listeria poisoning, is a serious infection precipitated by a pathogen named Listeria monocytogenes.

The ailment is caused by contaminated food and is dangerous for geriatrics, persons with a weakened immune system, or expectant mothers.

The symptoms may manifest weeks after being infected. According to the directives issued by the FDA, any person suffering from flu-like symptoms for more than a month must seek medical advice.

The most common symptoms include fibromyalgia, body pain, headaches, stiffness in the body, delirium, inability to maintain posture, loose motions, and other abdominal discomforts.

The disease can precipitate miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, and often fatal infections in newborns.
