This was announced by language-learning app Duolingo on Tuesday that its iconic mascot is no more.

The announcement read,

“It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mascot, Duo the Owl. For years, he tirelessly reminded millions to do their language lessons − sometimes with gentle nudges, sometimes with sheer, unhinged persistence. But even the most relentless of birds can only take so much.”

Duolingo in a post on the social media stated that the iconic Owl’s demise is being investigated and in a post which was shared on X Duolingo said

“We’re currently investigating Jimmy,”

However, he did spill the beans and stated that the iconic Owl had many enemies. The company even tried to lighten the situation and stated that he died while attempting to do lessons and even joked and asked users to share their credit card number to share Duolingo Max in his memory. Thankfully the company later clarified that it was a joke and asked users not to take the lessons seriously.

The passing away of Duo the owl would have painted a lot of netizens. If you are trying to learn a new language probably you would have been aware of the relentless green owl that has now become a part of history. The demise was announced by the company with a rejoinder that the app will continue to help users stay on track with their language lessons.

Condolences are pouring in and the most notable being from retail company Fashion Nova,

“But where can we RSVP to the funeral reception,”

Squishmallows aired its views on Instagram and said,

“How else am I supposed to talk to my customers”

 Baskin Robbins posted,

“Only the good (birds) die young”

 Cheez-It chirped in

“They died doing what they loved.”

The academic world was also perturbed and stated,

“Duo, we cannot take this run (right now). It’s literally our centennial this year.”

However the most touching post was from Netflix and in an Instagram post dedicated for the owl it said,

“Sending my condolences fr (for real).”

According to a X post from Duolingo on Tuesday, Duo the Owl also known as Duo Keyshauna Renee Lingo was born in 1000 BC and it was soon known as an animated green owl reminding users to complete their daily lessons.

However Duo debuted in 2011 but it looked different then and was a 2-D owl whose eyes and mouth spelled out “DUO” before it graduated into its 3-D version of Duo, which looked more realistic with an owl body and two wide eyes that stared right into a user’s soul.
